چکیده

Since the emergence of surface modification techniques, including polydopamine (PDA) layers using a single deposition process that is based on the oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine (DA), the number of studies concerning the functionalization of material surfaces via PDA coating has increased. While PDA is simple to apply to cover onto various kinds of substrates, most of conventional PDA layers show considerable dark brown coloration, restricting their use for some practical applications such as, optical materials, cosmetics, and diagnostic test materials. In this chapter, we provide an overview of our research of a colorless PDA layer containing atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator prepared by the reaction of DA with 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BiBB). The synthesized colorless PDA/BiBB2 layer ([BiBB]/ [DA] = 2) was successfully covered onto various types substrates, e.g., glass plates, flexible polypropylene films, filter papers, silica particles, and polymer particles. Then, the surface-initiated ATRP was conducted to create bioand smart-interfaces (Hierarchically structured coating). Furthermore, preparation of polymer brush based materials, colored particles, and raspberry-like particles based on colorless PDA coating were also investigated.

Mussel-inspired hydrophobic coatings for water-repellent textiles and oil removal.

A series of catechol derivatives with a different number of linear alkyl chain substituents, and different length, have been shown to polymerize in the presence of aqueous ammonia and air, yielding hydrophobic coatings that present the ability to provide robust and efficient water repellency on weaved textiles, including hydrophilic cotton. The polymerization strategy presented exemplifies an a...

Strong Antibacterial Polydopamine Coatings Prepared by a Shaking-assisted Method

Strong antibacterial polydopamine (PDA) coatings prepared by a facile shaking-assisted method is reported for the first time. It was found that a minor modification made to the conventional synthesis procedure of PDA coatings, viz. replacing the static solution condition with a shaking solution condition by using a mechanical shaker, can produce the roughened polydopamine (rPDA) coatings at dif...

Highly electrically conductive layered carbon derived from polydopamine and its functions in SnO2-based lithium ion battery anodes.

Thin carbonized polydopamine (C-PDA) coatings are found to have similar structures and electrical conductivities to those of multilayered graphene doped with heteroatoms. Greatly enhanced electrochemical properties are achieved with C-PDA-coated SnO(2) nanoparticles where the coating functions as a mechanical buffer layer and conducting bridge.

Short-term adhesion and long-term biofouling testing of polydopamine and poly(ethylene glycol) surface modifications of membranes and feed spacers for biofouling control.

Ultrafiltration, nanofiltration membranes and feed spacers were hydrophilized with polydopamine and polydopamine-g-poly(ethylene glycol) surface coatings. The fouling propensity of modified and unmodified membranes was evaluated by short-term batch protein and bacterial adhesion tests. The fouling propensity of modified and unmodified membranes and spacers was evaluated by continuous biofouling...
